| On September 21, 2012, DC Boxing and Fitness (DCBFit) and Capital MMA and Fitness represented the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area to take on fighters in Combat at the Capitale 28 in New York City (NYC). Presented by Lou Neglia and Ray Longo and sanctioned by the World Kickboxing Association (WKA), Combat at the Capitale is a kickboxing-only fight night series that features Muay Thai and Low-Kick fights. This evening’s fight card had 18 amateur fights (two were title fights) and 2 professional fights. |
[“Low-Kick” or International Kickboxing rules allow punches, kicks above the waist, and kicks to the legs, whereas traditional Full Contact Rules or “American Kickboxing” only allow punches and kicks that are above the waist.]
With three fighters (plus one exhibition fighter) from DCBFit and five from Capital MMA and Fitness, the DMV was hoping to return home with a good set of wins. But NYC has always been a tough city on these fighters, especially with hometown crowds behind teams, such as Team Tiger Shulmann (TTS). In the end, each camp did score one win, and they plan to return in February for the next Combat.

DMV FIGHT HIGHLIGHTS
Mike Trizano (TTS) defeats Robert Gonzalez (DCBFit) by TKO: Gonzalez makes his Capitale debut in the second fight of the night. Gonzalez tried to move in on his opponent, but Trizano was able to counter more effectively and took Gonzalez down with a kick in round 2. While the kick didn’t physically impact him, he took his time to get up during the count, and the referee called it given this was not Gonzalez’s first take down. If he got up right away, he might have had the chance to finish the fight.
Brandon Cuttino (TTS) defeats Joe Regignano (Capital MMA) by unanimous decision: Cuttino, part of TTS, had a large crowd of supporters. Cuttino was more aggressive in round 1, and Regignano seemed to need time to get into a rhythm. While he improved with each round, Cuttino maintained the edge and won by unanimous decision.
Mike Parker (DCBFit) versus Trevor Morris (B52/Advanced): Parker and Morris fought in an exhibition Muay Thai fight. This was Morris’ first fight, and Parker fought last year at the Capitale against Morris’ trainer, James “B52” Smith. One judge commented this fight was like a “Muay Thai clinic” – a great display of clinching and knees.
Shane Burgos (TTS) defeats Arturo Reyes (DCBFit) by unanimous decision: Reyes also made his Capitale debut this evening. During weigh in, there was a concern the weight differential would be too much for the fight to occur. When both fighters stepped into the ring, it was clear Reyes had a size disadvantage, but he did not back down. Reyes was aggressive, defended against Burgos’ attacks, and tried to work from inside. Despite his best efforts, Reyes drew a loss via unanimous decision.
John McGuire (Next Evolution) defeats Thomas Edwards (Capital MMA) by unanimous decision: Both fighters were aggressive and worked their distance well, executing strong kicks and punches. It was an even fight, with McGuire edging out Edwards in the end.
Brooke Rippy (DCBFit) defeats Alison Dicheter (TTS) by majority decision: Rippy scored the first and only win for DCBFit on this fight card. Rippy used her height and reach advantage to keep her opponent out. But Dicheter wasn’t deterred. She moved in and fought hard. The judges saw this as a very close fight with Rippy winning by majority decision.
Andrea DeAngelo (Neglia Competition Team) defeats Casey Terrell (Capital MMA) by unanimous decision: DeAngelo, a low-kick champion, lost her last Muay Thai bout at the Capitale and was ready to redeem herself. Terrell, who specializes in Muay Thai, came out strong in round 1, favoring the clinch and effectively using her knees. Terrell had control of the first round, and DeAngelo did not fight with the same finesse as she usually does. As the rounds progressed, DeAngelo got into a rhythm, working the clinch better, maintaining her distance, and utilizing her strong punching and kicking skills. DeAngelo regained control and won in unanimous decision.
Shane Zuiker (Capital MMA) defeats Wayne Brown (B52/Advanced) by unanimous decision: These fighters weighed in between 225-230 pounds, making this a super heavy weight fight by WKA standards. Zuiker did not display a lot of boxing during the fight. Instead he attacked Brown’s legs and went for the sweep several times. By the last round, Brown’s left leg was ineffective thanks to his opponent’s strikes. Zuiker was the only Capital MMA win this evening.
