Thai Championship Boxing (TCB) made its debut in Northern Virginia in January 2011 and has become one of the biggest Muay Thai amateur fight series in the DC area. On November 17, 2012, TCB presented 25 fights in Chantilly, VA, with a female title fight as the main event (picture above) between Lauren Piemontese (left) from Smokin-Fist Fight Team and Casey Terrell (right) from Capital MMA.
To accommodate the number of fights on the card, TCB organizers divided the fights into two groups starting at 3:30pm and 6:30pm, respectively. Altogether, TCB presented almost 7 hours of high-intensity fights. Six fights ended in a knockout/technical knock out, and four ended in a split decision. As the night went on, the energy of the crowd increased, and fight teams, such as Disciple MMA, Pentagon MMA, and Capital MMA brought an army of supporters who were not shy when cheering on their favorite fighters.
The most exciting non-title fight of the night was the 130-pound bout between David Lopez (Disciple) and Felipe Valentin (Yamasaki MMA). All three rounds were very fast-paced and aggressive, and neither fighter showed signs of fatigue during the fight. Lopez had strong kicking skills, and his composure was impressive for a young fighter making his Muay Thai fight debut. Lopez had a height advantage, but Valentin was the stronger fighter, and he gradually picked apart Lopez’ defenses to win by unanimous decision. The TCB organizers acknowledged this was the fight of the night by giving both fighters a trophy at the end.
The main event fight, scheduled for five, two-minute rounds, showcased two very strong female kickboxers competing for the 120-pound TCB title. Terrell is an experienced Muay Thai fighter and is a veteran of TCB, having won her previous TCB fight by unanimous decision. Piemontese, who started fighting less than two years ago, is the 2012 World Kickboxing Association (WKA) North America K-1 Novice champion (at 132 pounds). Piemontese dropped almost 10 pounds to take this fight.
Piemontese and Terrell clearly had different strengths in the ring. Piemontese was great with her hands and out-boxed Terrell, but Terrell was more effective with her kicks and knees. Piemontese attacked Terrell in the first two rounds and caught her several times with a series of brutal punch combinations. In round three, the fight began to shift. Piemontese was less aggressive, and Terrell started to gain control of the fight. In the last two rounds, it was an even exchange between two tough women. In the end, the judges scored the fight 49-46, 48-47, and 47-48, giving a split decision victory to Terrell. As for the bruises around Terrell’s left eye and the bruises on Piemontese’s legs, these are battle wounds that will be worn with pride. Be careful everyone…don’t mess with these ladies!
