With the Shine Lightweight Grand Prix tournament at the Patriot centered canceled, there's a void for those who wanted to see live action. Lets face the facts, most fans don't care about a commission or the politics of MMA. Shine and the Virginia Athletic Commission are pointing fingers at each other, but at the end of the days its the fighters and fans who are cheated. One such fighter Elder Ramos trained several weeks in anticipation of fighting on the Shine Lightweight Grand Prix Card. When the promoter failed to get a license, and moved the event to Oklahoma fighters such as Elder are left in the cold. To Date the UWC has been the only professional MMA promotion to stand and deliver quality fights to the D.C. Metropolitan area. Hail the day when D.C. Metro area fans stand-up and support the UWC more and allow them to bring quality shows every month, or every other month.
For those of you who are feeling cheated because you paid Shine and wanted to see live competition, there are options. If you thought you were going to see talented fighters handle business at the Patriot Center on September 10th, change of plans! According to sources, Shine Fights - lightweight Grant Prix tournament at the Patriot Center has been canceled. The tournament was supposed to feature 8 light weights with a twist. The matchmaking was to be done by the fans, which the Virginia Athletic Commission has said no to. Last spring Shine Fights promoted a fight between former champion boxer Ricardo Mayora and Din Thomas which was also canceled, due to legal actions taken by boxing promoter Don King. Apparently Mayorga was still in a contract with Don King, therefore in violation of that contract had he competed in "Worlds Collide", which was to be held in neighboring North Carolina. The promotion plans to reschedule the event on September 10th in Oklahoma, after being denied a license to operate in Virginia.
