Whats Next for the Local MMA Scene?

With the Shine Lightweight Grand Prix tournament at the Patriot centered canceled, there's a void for those who wanted to see live action. Lets face the facts, most fans don't care about a commission or the politics of MMA. Shine and the Virginia Athletic Commission are pointing fingers at each other, but at the end of the days its the fighters and fans who are cheated. One such fighter Elder Ramos trained several weeks in anticipation of fighting on the Shine Lightweight Grand Prix Card. When the promoter failed to get a license, and moved the event to Oklahoma fighters such as Elder are left in the cold. To Date the UWC has been the only professional MMA promotion to stand and deliver quality fights to the D.C. Metropolitan area. Hail the day when D.C. Metro area fans stand-up and support the UWC more and allow them to bring quality shows every month, or every other month.

For those of you who are feeling cheated because you paid Shine and wanted to see live competition,  there are options. On the September 18th, M-1 Selection: Americas Final is scheduled at the Bally Casino in Atlantic City. For more information check http://www.m-1global.com/m-1-selection-2/. Tickets are still available for the event and start at $35. The fighters will be competing in a boxing style ring, and not a caged octagon. The card consist of fighters such as George Sheppard fighting out of MMA Institute in Richmond, VA and Jose Figueroa representing the infamous American Top Team.  The fight card is as follows:

-70 KG: George Sheppard VS Jose Figueroa
-76 KG: Len Bentley
VS Thomas Gallicchio
-84 KG: Mike Geurin
VS Tyson Jeffries
-93 KG: Byron Byrd
VS Daniel Viscaya
+93 KG: Kenny Garner
VS Pat Bennett

Also on deck, Shogun Fights III is scheduled for  November 13th in Baltimore, MD at the 1st Mariner Arena. I happened to run into Justin Hickey while out and about and he told me will be fighting on the card. Justin Hickey is another promising local fighter who blazed his way through the amateur circuit. Hickey is a team member of Elder Ramos and UFC Fighter Kris McCray and a member of Gold Medal Grappling. Shogun promoters have not posted an official fight card, but check back on Throughthecage.com as well as Shogunfights.com for more information. Last but not least if you can't make it to any of the live local fights and support local MMA there are some great fights coming up on TV such as Shark Fights 13: Keith "The Dean of Mean" Jardine vs. Trevor Prangley. The fight should be available on pay per view depending on your service provider, if you have cable or satellite TV. Another great resource is Go Fight Live(http://www.gofightlive.tv/), where you can check out pro and amateur events locally and around the world!

Last but not least Operation Octagon, Onslaught Fights, and Barbarian fight Club return in October, featuring some of the areas most talented areas. If you've read fighters from other parts of the world, the amateur circuit is almost non-existent.  Our local circuit has developed some talented fighters and hopefully a world champion on the near future. Please check back with us for more information on all the amateur events.

Shine Fights at the Patriot Center Canceled

If you thought you were going to see talented fighters handle business at the Patriot Center on September 10th, change of plans! According to sources, Shine Fights - lightweight Grant Prix tournament at the Patriot Center has been canceled. The tournament was supposed to feature 8 light weights with a twist. The matchmaking was to be done by the fans, which the Virginia Athletic Commission has said no to. Last spring Shine Fights promoted a fight between former champion boxer Ricardo Mayora and Din Thomas which was also canceled, due to legal actions taken by boxing promoter Don King. Apparently Mayorga was still in a contract with Don King, therefore in violation of that contract had he competed in "Worlds Collide", which was to be held in neighboring North Carolina. The promotion plans to reschedule the event on September 10th in Oklahoma, after being denied a license to operate in Virginia.

Shine Fights last tried to run a PPV on May 15th, which was to be headlined by Din Thomas vs. boxer Ricardo Mayorga. Due to contract issues with Don King
, Mayorga was pulled from the event, which led to the North Carolina Athletic Commission shutting the show down, due financial concerns. Chute Boxe Head Augusto Oliveira recently stated that some of his fighters have not been paid for that event.
